CharGen
CharGen – makes the creation of AI-generated images and illustrations more efficient and simpler.
Tags:AI image illustration generationWhat is CharGen?
CharGen is an AI creation platform designed for D&D and other tabletop role-playing games; it can generate characters, NPCs, monsters, scenes, maps, items, as well as complete world settings. It also brings images, videos, audio files, 3D models, campaign preparation tools, and recording review functions together in a single web-based workspace.
The operator states in its developer terms that it is a company based in England, but it does not provide the full registered name on its public legal pages. The product is still in operation; customer service and developer APIs operate under different currency rules, limits, and contractual conditions.
Main functions
Converting character cards into portraits and using AI for drawing
- Users can upload PDF versions of character cards, screenshots of those cards, or paste D&D Beyond character information; the system then reads the details regarding race, class, equipment, and appearance to generate a portrait.
- It is also possible to start with a textual description, using predefined categories such as characters, NPCs, monsters, landscapes, town maps, battle maps, items, and spells.
- The platform offers over 160 AI models and more than 70 artistic styles, allowing users to make choices based on the type of image, speed, and Gold cost.
- Image transformation allows the composition, atmosphere, and style to be altered based on portraits, sketches, model photos, or avatar tokens, while striving to maintain the character’s recognizable features.
- The consistency of reference characters can only serve as a guide; the clothing, facial features, fingers, text, and consecutive shots may still change.
Editing, LoRA, and batch creation
- The paid editing suite offers partial redrawing and image enlargement, allowing for corrections to specific areas without the need to regenerate the entire image.
- Plus, Elite, and Ultimate include 1, 2, and 3 custom LoRA slots per month, respectively, for training specific characters or styles.
- Folders and presets allow you to save frequently used parameters, making it easier to generate consistent assets repeatedly for the same campaign.
- Ultimate offers advanced analytics and batch operations, making it suitable for professional content teams that work with a large number of character assets.
- Training materials must have legitimate rights; photos of people, artistic styles, and protected characters can pose risks related to privacy and intellectual property rights.
Videos, audio, maps, and 3D
- The same production studio can create character animations, scene videos, background music, battle music, character voices, and battle maps.
- The 3D model tool converts the character concept into a model suitable for the printing process; however, the final product still requires inspection in terms of the mesh, supports, and printing dimensions.
- The free token generator allows portraits to be cropped into circular avatars suitable for Foundry or Roll20, with the option to export them with a transparent background.
- Different media are created using different models, and the requirements regarding Gold, duration, clarity, and input vary.
RPG Workshops and World Setting Database
- Workshops can generate names, NPCs, characters, inns, settlements, regions, buildings, shops, dungeons, loot, magical items, and spellbooks.
- It is also possible to create poems and legends, monsters, environmental hazards, factions, as well as 3D models; the output includes textual descriptions, attributes, and visual materials.
- The campaign preparation pack can generate, at once, interconnected NPCs, locations, monsters, loot, and quest clues.
- World Codex groups NPCs, factions, settlements, regions, and dungeons according to campaigns and storylines, and establishes logical relationships between them.
- The balance between rule data and difficulty still requires the host to verify the version being used; the attributes generated cannot replace the official rulebook.
Recording, transcription, and review of battles
- Users can record or upload battle audio from Discord to generate transcripts, speaker tags, key events, highlights, and narrative summaries.
- The review option allows for adjustments to tone and length; Elite and Ultimate also include a five-panel storyboard feature for each battle.
- Real-time subtitles can help deaf players keep up with the conversation, but automatic transcription is affected by accents, noise, multiple people speaking at once, and proper nouns.
- Voice ID uses voice characteristics to identify players; it is disabled by default and should only be enabled with the explicit consent of both the host and all participants who are recording.
Basic usage process
- Create an account to receive daily Gold, and first test the model and style using a fictional, non-sensitive character.
- Choose from characters, NPCs, monsters, maps, items, videos, audio, or RPG entity tools.
- Fill in the race, occupation, equipment, scene, and art style from the preset options, or upload reference materials for which you have permission to use.
- Preview the Gold required for this model and the output parameters; once confirmed, generation will begin.
- For areas that are not satisfactory, use redrawing, image enlargement, or image transformation to avoid unnecessary repeated processing.
- Save the final materials in a folder, World Codex, or the corresponding campaign, and establish relationships between characters and locations.
- Obtain the consent of all participants before recording the battle; for Voice ID, a separate record of explicit consent is required.
- Before exporting, check the rules, facts, copyright, rights of individuals, and the status of the commercial packages.

Boundaries between commercial licensing and copyright
| Plan or content | Public licensing instructions | Practical usage suggestions |
|---|---|---|
| Free images | The pricing Q&A section is intended for personal use only. | Do not use for sales, advertising, or paid products |
| Plus images | The pricing Q&A section is intended for personal use only. | Commercial use is allowed only after upgrading or obtaining written permission. |
| Elite and Ultimate images | Includes commercial use rights | It is still necessary to verify the rules regarding third-party characters, figures, and models. |
| Image of the one-time use Gold package | Account package upon purchase | Save evidence of packages and orders at the time of creation |
| API output | Products from partners that have practical functions can be integrated. | The original API or the thinly encapsulated interfaces cannot be resold. |
The general terms for consumers state that the rights to the delivered works are transferred to the user and can be used for commercial purposes, but the pricing information specifies that the Free and Plus versions are intended for personal use only; there is a conflict between these two statements. For commercial projects, the Elite or Ultimate versions should be used, and written confirmation must be obtained for such important projects.
- The platform does not guarantee that the output generated by AI can be copyrighted, trademarked as original work, or that it does not infringe on third-party rights.
- Users retain the right to their own created content, while granting CharGen a non-exclusive license to use, modify, display, and distribute such content for the purpose of providing services.
- It is not allowed to upload art, trademarks, protected characters, photographs of people, sounds, or information related to private battles that one does not have the right to use.
- For LoRA training, image transformation, and Voice ID, it is particularly necessary to verify the rights to the materials and obtain consent from the relevant parties.
API and developer integration
- Create an organization in the developer portal and generate an API key with the minimum required permissions.
- Store the key only in the server-side secret management system; do not place it on the web frontend, mobile clients, or public repositories.
- Query the model catalog and the current price version for your organization, then select between image, video, audio, 3D, or structured entity types.
- A unique idempotent key is used when submitting a generation request, to prevent duplicate billing due to network retries.
- Poll the task status; upon success, the media assets or structured results are retrieved, while failed tasks are automatically returned to the wallet.
- Record costs based on the model and parameters; when the balance is insufficient, top up first and then use the same idempotent key to attempt the operation again safely.
- Add content filtering, manual review, logging, deletion, and complaint handling for end users; do not resell the original interface directly.
| API project | Current rules | Development considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Output type | Images, videos, audio, 3D models, and 18 types of RPG entities | Physical portraits are charged separately as images. |
| Authentication | Bearer key and scope of permissions | Revoke and rotate immediately after the leak. |
| Rate | 120 requests per minute per key | If it exceeds the limit, retreat as indicated. |
| idempotence | Replay the original result for the same key within 24 hours | For server errors, the original key should be reused. |
| Billing | Independent USD prepaid wallet; charges are applied upon creation. | Completely separate from the consumer Gold. |
| Top up | From $10 to $100,000 per transaction; taxes are additional. | The fees incurred for completing the generation are usually not refundable. |
| Availability | Make reasonable efforts to provide it. | There is currently no SLA or commitment regarding fixed operation time. |
| DPA | Not available at the moment. | Both parties are defined as independent data controllers. |
API prices are managed according to dated price versions; an organization remains fixed on one version, and notification is given at least 30 days in advance before a change to new prices takes effect. There are numerous specific model base prices and variable parameters, and the amounts indicated in the organization’s model catalog as well as those displayed when a task is created should be taken as the reference.
Privacy, recording, and Voice ID
- The service collects data on accounts, contacts, transactions, devices, IPs, usage, creations, support, marketing, and social logins.
- Consumer personal information is stored in the UK, while external services for hosting, analysis, advertising, payments, and other purposes may process it abroad.
- Battle recordings, transcripts, and character information constitute user-generated content; the uploader must explain their purpose and the way in which they will be stored to all participants in advance.
- Voice ID creates a numerical profile that describes the physical characteristics of a voice; it constitutes sensitive biometric information, and its function is disabled by default.
- Voice ID will only be activated when the host enables it, every player on the list agrees, the session is started, and the person who uploads the recording confirms that all those who are being recorded have given their consent.
- The Voice ID audio is processed by pyannoteAI on servers located in the European Economic Area; conservative guidelines are applied, and the processed materials as well as usage records may be retained for an extended period of time.
- Revoking consent or leaving the campaign will delete the sound files and related short audio recordings saved by CharGen; however, the names that were transcribed in the past remain as ordinary text and must be edited or deleted separately.
- The API does not provide DPA at the moment and treats both parties as separate controllers; it is therefore not suitable for processing large amounts of end-user personal data without first conducting an assessment.
- Internet transmission cannot guarantee absolute security; sensitive campaigns and corporate projects should have minimum permissions, expiration dates, and access auditing in place.

| Asset management | Folders, presets, and campaigns connected to the World Codex | The boundaries for long-term migration and bulk export need to be tested. |
| Audio review | Automatic transcription, speakers, highlights, and storyboards | Agreement, sensitive data, and high retention risks |
| Develop interfaces | Both multimedia and structured RPG entities can be generated. | No SLA, no DPA, and the original interface cannot be resold. |
Summary
CharGen is suitable for game masters and game creators who wish to manage character design, world settings, campaign preparation, and post-campaign reviews in one place; it also provides developers with comprehensive multimedia and RPG entity APIs. When selecting a package, it is necessary to take into account factors such as Gold accumulation, fair use policies, conflicts related to commercial licensing, permission for recording, Voice ID retention, and rules regarding separate API wallets.
