What is Udio?

Udio is an AI music platform that creates complete songs from textual descriptions, lyrics, or existing audio. Users can specify the genre, era, mood, instruments, type of singer, and theme, and thus generate music with vocals or purely instrumental. Further modifications can be made using functions such as Extend, Remix, Inpaint, Styles, Voices, and Sessions.

It is important to be aware of a key change at the moment: Udio is in a transitional phase following its licensing agreements with Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. The platform still allows for creating, editing, streaming, and sharing content, but downloads of audio files, videos, and Stems have been discontinued. As a result, it is better suited for online experimentation and community sharing, rather than serving as a proper tool for professional production where files need to be exported.

Why is it not possible to download at the moment?

Starting from October 29, 2025, Udio ceased all downloads on its platform as part of the preparations for a new generation of services that would involve collaboration with record labels and artists. The official help documentation still indicated in 2026 that downloads of audio files, videos, and Stems were disabled.

This is not a browser issue, nor are it restrictions related to free accounts or the absence of certain buttons in a particular plan. Even with a Standard or Pro subscription, it is still not possible to export files at the moment.

Before making a purchase, one should consider the inability to download as a key limitation, rather than expecting that this issue will be resolved after an upgrade.

What else can be done during the transition phase?

Users can still use the v1, v1.5, and v1.5 Allegro models, as well as core functions such as Create, Extend, Remix, Styles, Voices, Inpaint, and Sessions. Works can be shared through Udio page links, and unregistered visitors can also listen to them online.

Online links do not equate to downloadable assets. The availability of links, platform rules, and future formats may change; therefore, commercial deliveries, video edits, distribution, and long-term archiving should not rely solely on hosted pages.

Text to song generation

After the user enters details such as genre, mood, speed, instruments, theme, and singer type, Udio generates two candidate versions each time. It is possible to choose short clips of 32 seconds for a quick exploration, or longer clips of around 2 minutes and 10 seconds.

A single prompt can yield different melodies and vocals. Officials recommend describing the musical direction clearly; moreover, using a Brick Prompt in the order of \"genre, artist, mood, instruments, form of the piece\" can help achieve more consistent results.

Custom lyrics

The lyric mode supports automatic generation, purely instrumental versions, and custom lyrics. Users can use tags such as Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Intro, Outro, Drop, Instrumental Break to organize the structure, and they can also use parentheses to indicate harmonies or add performance notes.

Guidance tags are not hard-coded commands; the model may ignore them or render them incorrectly. Chinese characters, characters with multiple pronunciations, abbreviations, and names need to have their pronunciation broken down, their spelling adjusted, or they need to be generated multiple times. Additionally, the copyright to the lyrics must belong legally to the user.

Extend – Extended songs

Extend allows adding an Intro, Section, or Outro before or after an existing song, thereby transforming short segments into longer compositions. Users can adjust the context window so that the model can take into account different lengths of the preceding sections.

Each time an extension is performed, two new versions are created and Credits are consumed. Repeated extensions can lead to variations in the timbre, changes in rhythm, and repetitions of lyrics; it is therefore necessary to compare the different branches at each step, rather than proceeding only with the result of the last extension.

Remix and Inpaint

Remix creates similar yet distinct versions of existing music, with the possibility to adjust the degree of difference; Inpaint or Edit is used to regenerate selected sections, fixing lyrics, singing, transitions, and individual musical instruments.

Local editing reconstructs the audio by taking the context into account; it is not the same as lossless cutting in traditional DAWs. Even changing just one line can affect the tone and rhythm of the surrounding parts, so it is necessary to listen to the audio before and after the edit.

Sessions timeline editing

Sessions is a waveform timeline interface intended for paid subscribers; it allows users to extend or replace segments within the same workspace, view different versions of a clip, undo changes, and align the lyrics with the selected time range. All generated versions are automatically assigned to the corresponding Session.

Generation in Sessions consumes Credits according to the same rules as regular editing. It improves version management, but the final result cannot be exported to a local device at the moment.

Styles style reference

Styles can be used as a reference, either through one or two Udio tracks, uploaded audio files, or saved Styles, to create new songs with a similar atmosphere. Style Blend also allows control over the relative influence of the two references, enabling combinations such as choir with reggae, or folk with funk.

The core styles are available to all users, while some features related to mixed styles, style libraries, and sessions are reserved for subscribers or as part of the Pro trial features. Works created from uploaded audio cannot be posted in the Udio community.

Upload your own audio

Paid users can upload instrument recordings, original DAW compositions, and natural sounds for which they hold the rights, and they can use functions such as Extend, Inpaint, Remix, Style, or start a Session on them.

Uploading commercial songs and copyrighted audio materials for which no usage rights exist is prohibited. By uploading such content, one assumes ownership of the relevant rights;

Pure acoustic a cappella is not explicitly prohibited, but officials say that the quality of such recordings might not be good at the moment.

Voices and Voice Control

Voices offers subscribers early access to this feature, so that the voices generated later can maintain a certain singing style or vocal identity. It is different from simply cloning any real singer, as the platform still imposes restrictions related to voice usage, copyright, and security.

A similar voice cannot replace the artist’s own consent. Udio must not be used to impersonate artists, create fake endorsements, or bypass the permissions set by the artists themselves.

v1, v1.5 and Allegro

During the transition period, versions v1, v1.5, and v1.5 Allegro can still be used. Version v1.5 improves sound quality, provides better control over tone, and supports multiple languages, while Allegro is designed for faster generation.

Different models have their own preferences in terms of lyrics, vocals, structure, and speed.

Old projects may not retain the exact same singers and arrangements after switching models. When a consistent series of works is needed, it is necessary to record the model, Seed, prompts, lyrics, and advanced parameters.

Advanced control

Manual Mode, Seed, Prompt Strength, Lyrics Strength, Clip Start, Generation Quality, and Style Reduction allow for further control over the results. Seed helps to reproduce a similar outcome with similar settings, while the strength sliders enable adjustment between the degree of adherence to the prompt and the level of naturalness.

These controls do not guarantee certainty; the same Seed may change even after updates to the model or the product, so they cannot be regarded as a mechanism for permanently restoring audio.

Free free account

Free provides 10 Credits per day, and after those are used up, an additional 100 Credits can be obtained each month. Neither the daily nor the monthly quota is cumulative – the credits do not carry over from one period to another.

Free accounts can generate up to 3 songs of around 2 minutes and 10 seconds per day.

Each time you perform an action such as Create, Extend, Remix, Inpaint, or Edit, two versions are created: two 32-second pieces require 2 Credits each, while two pieces of around 130 seconds each require 4 Credits. Trimming does not consume any Credits.

Price and version comparison

Standard prices and quotas

The standard historical and current subscription options are based on a rate of 10 dollars per month; the annual payment is usually 96 dollars, which amounts to 8 dollars per month. With the partnership with UMG, the monthly credit limit has been increased from 1200 to 2400 credits, and it is now possible to create up to about 6 pieces of music at the same time.

Some of the more recent help pages still show the old figure of 1200 Credits; this is due to a discrepancy in document synchronization. The correct figure to use is 2400, as indicated on the account’s Pricing and Credits pages as well as in the UMG change announcements.

Pro price and quota

The Pro plan costs $30 per month; an annual payment entitles users to a 20% discount, resulting in a cost of around $288 per year, or $24 per month. The monthly credit limit has been increased from 4800 to 6000 credits, allowing users to create up to 5 sets of songs, for a total of 10 songs.

Pro also offers higher concurrency levels as well as certain experimental features related to Styles and Sessions, but it still does not allow the downloading of audio, video, or Stems. If the main goal is to export music, Pro is not suitable for meeting that need at present.

7-day Standard trial

Each creator can initiate a Standard trial that lasts up to 7 days, without the need for a Pro trial. This trial provides access to features such as Voice Control, music and lyric editing, tools for uploading audio files and generating related content, Style Reference, and the ability to create custom covers.

During the trial period, the same free credit limit applies: up to 3 songs of about 2 minutes per day. If it is not canceled before the end of 7 days, the annual plan selected at that time will be charged.

Unless the user switches to a monthly payment in advance.

Before starting the trial, it is necessary to carefully check the renewal period.

Additional Credits

Subscription quotas and Free limits are not carried over; once the subscription is canceled, the account returns to the Free limits.

Credits purchased separately on a pay-as-you-go basis do not expire and can be used across different months.

During the cooperation transition period, subscribers were also given 1,000 Credits at once, which did not expire.

A one-time additional payment is not part of a long-term package commitment. When planning the budget, one should consider only the normal monthly limit; historical bonus amounts should not be regarded as fixed rights for new users.

Unsubscribe

Subscriptions and trials can be changed or canceled on the Account page. Once canceled, the benefits usually remain valid until the end of the current payment cycle, after which free limitations are reinstated;

Monthly subscription Credits are not discounted or carried over if they are not used up.

It is still not possible to download the works before cancellation; therefore, one should consider whether it is necessary to keep the online projects, share the links, and retain the project metadata. Deleting an account is not the same as canceling a subscription.

Work sharing and permissions

Users can share their works publicly through Udio links, and they can also decide at the level of individual tracks whether others are allowed to Remix, Extend, or Style those tracks. By default, these permissions for creative modifications are enabled; Pro users have more detailed control options.

Permissions can only be modified one song at a time; batch setting for the entire database is not supported at the moment. Before making something public, it is necessary to check the lyrics, cover art, uploaded materials, and the licensing terms for any secondary creations.

Collaborating with Universal and Warner

Udio has entered licensing agreements with both Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, and has resolved the related copyright disputes. The next-generation service allows artists who choose to participate to license their sounds and styles for use in remixes, covers, mashups, and the creation of new songs; it also establishes a revenue-sharing mechanism for these artists and songwriters.

These are future experiences that are currently under development; they do not mean that current users can already use the voices of any artists or upload commercial songs at will. At this stage, they are still subject to transitional rules and download restrictions.

Current status of commercial use

Earlier terms allowed users to use the generated works publicly; paid users did not need to give credit, while free users generally had to do so. However, the current service is governed by transitional provisions and does not allow exports, so it is not possible to simply rely on the old terms to claim that the content can be downloaded and used freely for commercial purposes.

Users who plan to use existing Udio works in advertisements, releases, customer deliveries, or film projects should first review the current Transition ToS and obtain a written confirmation that can be kept on file. An online sharing link alone is not sufficient for managing such assets on a long-term commercial basis.

Official iOS app

Udio offers an official iPhone app that allows users to create, listen to, and manage their content on mobile devices. The company warns that counterfeit apps are available in the market, and the only safe ways to access its services are through the Udio website or the official App Store app.

There is currently no official Android app. Third-party Android apps, downloaders, and wrapper clients may steal login credentials or violate the terms of service.

API and GitHub

At present, Udio does not provide any publicly available official APIs, SDKs, or open-source models. The services that claim to offer an “Udio API” as well as the GitHub wrappers are mostly reverse-engineered interfaces, third-party proxies, or APIs from competing products; they are not supported by Udio officially.

The core model, training code, and weights are not made available under an open-source license. Using unofficial interfaces can lead to key leaks, account suspension, and unstable output, making them unsuitable for use in production environments.

6. Regularly update the glossary, sound licensing, and deletion policies;
