What is Wordtune?

Wordtune is an AI-powered tool for English writing and reading, developed by AI21 Labs. It helps users rewrite sentences and paragraphs, adjust the tone of their text, improve grammar and flow, continue writing content, and summarize web pages and PDFs. It functions more like an editing partner integrated into the writing process, rather than a chatbot that generates an entire article at once; it is suitable for use in emails, reports, social media posts, draft essays, and communication in English when one is not a native speaker.

The current product consists of the Wordtune Editor, browser extensions, and an iPhone app. The Editor is suitable for writing long texts, managing files, creating summaries, and using Ask AI.

It is used for real-time text rewriting in scenarios such as web form fields, Gmail, and Google Docs; on mobile devices, it allows text editing in various apps through iOS apps and keyboards.

Core functions

1. Rewrite sentences and rephrase paragraphs

After selecting a sentence or a paragraph, Wordtune provides several revised versions, allowing users to compare them and choose the one that best conveys the original meaning. It helps to reduce literal translations, repeated words, and awkward sentence structures, offering more natural English phrasings.

If a paragraph is too long, it may be split automatically; therefore, after rewriting it is necessary to check the logic of the paragraphs and the references used within them.

AI-driven rewriting does not guarantee that the facts remain unchanged; numbers, negative words, times, conditions, and technical terms are particularly prone to being weakened or altered during such revisions. Formal emails, contracts, papers, and medical content should be checked sentence by sentence against the original text.

2. Casual, Formal, Expand, and Shorten

Users can change the same text to a more casual or more formal tone, and they can also expand on their arguments or shorten their statements. Expand is suitable for adding explanations, examples, and transitions, while Shorten is useful for condensing emails and summaries.

The functional aspect of tone should be determined in light of the actual audience; it cannot be assumed that content meets the standards of legal or academic writing merely because it is labeled as \"Formal\".

3. Grammar, spelling, and intelligent synonyms

Wordtune checks for spelling and grammar errors, and provides context-related synonyms, suggestions for improving vocabulary usage, as well as advice on enhancing clarity and flow. All plans – Basic, Advanced, and Unlimited – include unlimited checks for spelling and grammar; the Advanced plan and those with higher tiers offer more comprehensive AI-driven recommendations.

Intelligent synonyms take more account of the context of a sentence than mechanical dictionaries, but proper nouns, fixed expressions, brand names, and quoted text should not be replaced arbitrarily. Non-native speakers can use it as a helper for expressing themselves in English, rather than it automatically correcting all linguistic errors.

4. Contextual Suggestions and AI continuation

In Editor, it is possible to continue writing based on the context, generating the next sentence, examples, summaries, or conclusions. Basic allows 10 uses per day for rewriting and for AI suggestions; Advanced provides 30 uses per day; Unlimited has no such limits.

The suggestion is in draft form; the user needs to decide whether it fits their argument and style.

5. Ask AI

Ask AI allows users to pose questions based on the text at hand; it enables the system to be revised to make it more persuasive, formal, friendly, or clear, and it also provides feedback on structure as well as new ideas. The official help center classifies this feature as part of the Advanced, Unlimited, and Teams capabilities – the free version does not offer full access to Ask AI.

The new facts, examples, or conclusions generated by Ask AI do not have an automatic source of verification. They should be checked independently in research papers, news reports, and business reports, to avoid mistaking well-worded statements for reliable evidence.

6. PDF, web pages, and text summaries

In Wordtune Editor’s Summaries feature, it is possible to upload PDF files, paste web links, or directly insert text. The system generates short summaries next to the original text and highlights the relevant paragraphs; users can also take notes, search for keywords, rephrase the text, and export the summaries.

Pages and summaries are automatically saved in their respective Libraries.

PDF files, documents with more than around 300 pages or 10MB in size, articles behind paywalls, as well as online documents that require login credentials may not be able to be processed. The old standalone entry for Wordtune Read and the earlier indication of “5 articles per month” can still be seen on some pages, but the current unified pricing is as follows: Basic offers 3 summaries per month, Advanced offers 15 summaries per month, and Unlimited provides an unlimited number of summaries.

7. Browser extensions

Extended support is available for Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, and Arc; suggestions for rephrasing and tone can be displayed in the input fields of most web pages. Google Docs requires the Pages layout mode, and Pageless may not function properly without a page layout.

The new version focuses primarily on writing, while the task of generating summaries has been integrated into the Editor.

Safari extensions are not supported at the moment. Such extensions read the text on the web pages that the user is editing; when dealing with customer data, unpublished documents, or internal systems, it is necessary to comply with the organization’s policies regarding browser extensions and data security.

8. iPhone apps and Wordtune Keyboard

iOS apps support rewriting, AI-generated content, and summarization; the Wordtune Keyboard allows users to access functions such as Rewrite, Create with AI, and Smart Email Reply within other iPhone apps. Users need to enable third-party keyboards and switch to the Wordtune Keyboard.

There is currently no official app for Android.

9. Multilingual input and English output

The core output of Wordtune is in English; it can understand inputs in Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Hebrew, Russian, German, French, and Portuguese, and convert them into English. While its generative capabilities sometimes produce content in other languages, the official support is limited to English output only.

Therefore, it is suitable for converting Chinese thinking into natural English, but not as a complete tool for polishing Chinese text.

How to choose between Editor and Extension?

• Editor：Suitable for long texts such as papers, articles, and reports; it supports paragraph rewriting, summaries, Ask AI, as well as Pages and Summaries databases.
• Extension：It is suitable for making immediate edits in emails, web forms, Google Docs, and social media; it does not offer a complete document library or a unified summary interface.
• iOS：It is suitable for mobile messages, emails, and short texts; for complex and lengthy content, it is recommended to use the desktop website.

The authorities have ceased the development of early independent desktop test versions for Mac; currently, Mac users should use the Web or compatible browsers. The official list of supported applications does not include a separate plugin for Microsoft Word, and the information regarding Word integration mentioned in older articles should not be considered as features that are currently available.

Prices and plans

The following shows the monthly price equivalent to an annual payment in dollars, as displayed on the official website during this verification. The amount may vary depending on the region, any promotions in effect, and the choice of monthly payment plan; the details listed on the settlement page shall prevail.

The paid plan offers a 3-day free trial, and it is necessary to enter payment details first; if it is not canceled before the end of the trial period, charging will begin.

The official website states that refunds are not provided, but cancellation is possible before the next billing cycle or at the end of the trial period.

Eligible students, teachers, and non-profit organizations can apply for a 30% discount on monthly or annual payments.

“Unlimited” is still subject to fair use policies, automated abuse restrictions, and the terms of service; it cannot be considered as something that can be shared among multiple people or used for batch API calls. One account can be used to log in on multiple devices, but multiple users cannot share it simultaneously.

Privacy and content responsibility

Wordtune processes the text that users select, paste, or type in order to provide suggestions. Browser extensions, mobile keyboards, and cloud-based editors have different data pathways; therefore, corporate and educational users should review the current privacy policies, third-party models, data retention periods, and administrator guidelines before handling personal or confidential information.

The output generated by AI may be similar to existing text, or it may alter the original meaning. School assignments, papers, and publications must comply with the rules regarding the use and disclosure of AI.

Even if the text is rewritten, when using someone else’s ideas it is still necessary to cite the source.

GitHub and the open-source status

AI21 Labs makes some of its research code, model examples, and developer tools available on GitHub, but no complete source code for the Wordtune product that can be deployed independently was found during this verification. Wordtune Editor, the extended backend, the rewrite models, as well as the account and subscription systems are proprietary cloud services, and such components should be marked as not being open source.
